Red Cross Class Offered THIS Month at Sunset Station Hotel & Casino

Sunset Station is playing host for our First Aid/CPR/AED training on Jan. 28, from 12p to 5p.

You can get your 2 year (that’s two years) certification by attending this half day class! Such a deal! Weekend, close to home, in and out. Nothing could be easier! $75/person

Congratulations to all of you on making MLK Day of Service such a HUGE success!

Current counts show that TWICE as many people showed up to volunteer as did last year. There were almost 200 of you this year helping to spread the word of fire safety.

We just want to thank you all so much for the work you did. The work you did, and the information you passed out could very well save someone’s life. So worth it!

Happy New Year, ya’ll! Here’s hoping you have a healthy and prosperous new one. I know when I’m looking to honor the change of  a new year, I look for things that I can do to keep the momentum of service moving. But where does one find those opportunities?

LOOK NO FURTHER! You lucky folks have an unique opportunity to reach out to fellow citizens in the Las Vegas Valley by volunteering for an upcoming event with the American Red Cross!

“What could it be?” you’re probably asking yourself with breathless anticipation. I know. I get it!

On Monday, January 16, from 1p – 4p, we’re looking for people and their organizations or civic groups to help us canvass neighborhoods to spread the good news of fire prevention and safety! And you’re invited.

We’re looking for at least 80 folks to join fire fighters and other volunteers to assemble at 4 different fire stations, get the info, and go out and remind people of fire safety and leave them a reminding door hanger. I know. A DOOR HANGER! You get to give gifts too! Participants can be as young as 12, so this is a great opportunity for you and your kids’ schools to get involved with volunteering for the Red Cross as well. All are welcome, so even your friends who have not yet joined our ranks as Red Cross Volunteers (‘everyday heroes” I like to call you) are invited to come and be part of the great work that all of you do.

The four fire stations at which we’ll be meeting prior to our canvassing are as follows:

Weekly Staff Meeting Notes

12-13-2011

Erika:

 The annual Red Cross Holiday Party is coming up on Dec. 16th. There has been a great response this year. It’s going to be exciting!

Marie:

Health and Safety has already seen an increase in full service contracts since the arrival of Joey & Willie. Congrats to them!

Scott:

Health & Safety office processes are changing soon, Marie, Erika and Scott will meet tomorrow to get processes down.

Scott in Fund Development :

 The Chapter received a Proclamation from the Clark County Board of Commissioners on Dec. 6th thanks to Commissioner Sisilak. The Commissioner is a former Red Cross Board member. Hudson News made a check donation at the meeting presenting the Red Cross of Southern Nevada with $40,000.00.

The Fire Hurts… Red Cross Helps campaign launches on January 6th, 2012.  The chapter needs to raise 200K just to cover our expenses responding to home fires in the Southern Nevada region.

Becky –

Always vigilant, Becky is looking for corporate donors. 

Brooke –

The Spring 2012 Red Cross Bowling Tournament has a place and time: the Orleans on 2/25/2012.  Save the date on your calendars!

 The Tiffany Circle members participated in the Holiday Mail for Heroes campaign by hand delivering cards to service members at Nellis Air Force Base, and the base hospital yesterday. They had a great time, and all went very well.

Doni-

The Chapter is looking for instructors in Ogden, UT, due to the holidays. Peoples’ schedules are a bit too full.

Scott –

Wanted to point out that both Bank of America and Las Vegas Valley Water District have reached out to him to tell him how great their CPR courses went.  Both organizations have a representative in the chapter board.

Lance –

Lance, Marie and Doni are now using their national email, the staff roster and shared contacts have been updated with this. Also Lance is now Wilderness First Aid Certified and was the only one in the class to get 100% in the written test!

Doni & Lance thanked Heather for her help last week with an IT challenge.

 
Mavina –

Took a CPR class that Tony Diggs taught and he was a wonderful instructor!

Lance is taking his SABA training (where we track folks who sign up for training) so that the Mavina’s departure is smooth, and Lance can help.

She is working with Lloyd on the Newsletter. This time around the newsletter is more personable. A ”staff picks” section was added in which several staff got to say what they loved about the Red Cross.

Gary from MOHF @ Nellis – the hospital is working in transitioning to the new VA hospital, once the new hospital is open the MOHF will only take active duty members and the VA will take veterans.   

Stuart Hess will be out until December 21^st.

Jeff –

Working on enhancing communications between Nellis & Chapter by having representatives of MOHF, such as Gary, and Margie come to weekly staff meetings even if it is once a month.  Quarterly meetings will be held for SAF at Nellis AFB.  Currently there are about 100 Volunteers in SAF looking to get 400 volunteers to help staff the new VA hospital and clinics.

Scott –

IT – the computers are really slow because the processors are very old and can’t multi task.  NetEffect will be providing quotes to replace most computers, the chapter will work with the National IT guy to get computers replaced.

The Chapter is selling Las Vegas Wranglers tickets for the January 13th, 2012 game. Game time is 7pm.

Tickets are $10, but the best part is that $3.50 goes to the Chapter! Tell all your friends about this fun night, and make an event of it!
